Comments from the Knuckle: "For better or worse, gishes are just my favorite, and when we released the Witch, I noticed it had a distinct lack of gishing options. . . just my luck that I didn't notice that fact before we wrapped on the Complete Witch. 😛"
Steel Magic
Secret covens throughout the Material Plane practice their magicks by weaving spells into their blades. Maniacally cackling and whirling their way across the battlefield, these witches weave their curses into a bloody tapestry whenever they bring their steel to bear.

Bonus Proficiencies
At 3rd level, you have proficiency with three martial melee weapons of your choice. These weapons cannot have the two-handed property.
Hex: Dark Steel
Starting at 3rd level, you have learned a secret hex associated with the profane rites of long-forgotten covens. When you grasp a weapon in one hand, and nothing in your other hand, you can use your bonus action to spread your curse into its steel. You gain the following benefits until the end of your next turn:
- The weapon serves as an arcane focus.
- You add your Charisma modifier to AC, as long as you are not wearing medium or heavy armor or holding a shield.
- You can use your Charisma modifier for the attack and damage rolls you make with a one-handed weapon.
Cackling Killer
At 6th level, when you use your Cackle feature, you can make one additional weapon attack when you take the Attack action on your turn.
Soul Eater
Starting at 10th level, as a bonus action, you can plunge your weapon into your familiar, drawing it forth cloaked in green flame. Your familiar dies instantly. Until you take a short or long rest, you can't summon your familiar again, and that weapon deals an additional 1d8 fire damage on a hit.
Shrieking Strike
Starting at 14th level, your accursed magic has seeped into your weapon. When you make a melee attack against a hostile creature, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your witch spell save DC. On a failed save, it is frightened until the end of your next turn.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

ReplyDeleteThis one won't be in the Complete Witch, remember.
DeleteI'll /try/ to put the Complete Witch and the Expansion Pack before the end of the month. I don't want to /promise/ that, but I'll /try/.
PDF: 3rd level and 1st level spells duplicated.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, this looks great!
Should be fixed now; thanks for pointing that out.
DeleteTotally wasn't expecting this to go up this week! Pleasant surprise! :D
ReplyDeleteI suppose Dark Steel does not stack with mage armor? If so, it seems somewhat too powerful. If not, mage armor seems like a bad spell for that witch.
ReplyDeleteyou would not be wearing a shield or medium/heavy armor, so it would work.
DeleteDark Steel does stack with Mage Armor, just like Bladesong does for the Wizard. Unlike the Wizard, this requires a bonus action every round to maintain.
DeleteHmmm. Well, I guess it's not too bad then.
DeleteOk... so as long as you use a bonus action every turn for dark steel, you have cha+dex+light armor for ac, and cha to hit and damage
ReplyDeleteI was wondering If the witch would get the Gish treatment it deserved :)

ReplyDeleteAfter reading through the witch, preparing to make a Steel Magic witch, I found it odd that the most Gish like GRAND hex (Hybrid) can't be used in conjunction with Dark Steel because they both require bonus actions. And you can't activate Dark Steel after Hybrid. Would it break anything to change Hybrid to "an Action or a Bonus Action" as this Would fix the disparity.
ReplyDeleteHaste action with cackling killer, do I get the extra attack?
ReplyDeleteThe "Steel Magic" Witch subclass has a mistake on the "Cackling Killer" feature. It says "Also at 6th level", but there are no other 6th level abilities.
ReplyDeleteThere's also no limitation on how long the "Soul Eater" ability lasts.
The "Shrieking Strike" ability says "When you make a melee attack against a hostile creature, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your witch spell save DC", but perhaps it should be reworded to "When you make a melee attack against a hostile creature, you may choose to cause your weapon to shriek as it slices through the air. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your witch spell save DC" just because the way it's currently worded now, every strike you make is automatically a Shrieking Strike and the enemy MUST roll a save against it
